Re: suggestion... how about introducing ourselves??
Hi Tom, Maybe post this on your own thread, as I'm not sure how many people check this 'welcome' thread. I cut my coat according to my cloth. Towards the end, I was just working and sleeping, which proved to be quite good for my bank balance! As for the tablets - if you're going to have a transplant...

Re: question @ DIET
I've been vegan for short periods of time. I don't see why it would cause a problem, if you make sure you get all the nutrients. Generally people are tolerant of vegetarianism and intensely hostile to veganism. I don't understand it really as I consider my vegetarianism hypocritical - ie production...

Re: Sun exposuure after translant
I went to see a dermatologist about an unrelated matter and she prescribed me factor 50 sunblock. I've got a repeat prescription as well, so it's all covered in my annual prescription direct debit. I just slap the stuff on with abandon! Having said that, I'm a geek and rarely go outside in daylight,...

Re: Taking pills - how long don't you eat
I was told (and I think the instructions in the pack say) no food 2 hours before and 1 hour after you take tacro. Also don't take the doses less than 10 hour apart. I stick to this pretty well (it helped me to stop snacking in the evening as I can't eat after 8pm) but I'm not too concerned if I encr...

Re: Aftter transplant foods to avoid.
Oops. I eat prawns quite a bit but then again I'm on allopurinol. :) I was told to avoid any raw fish or meat, unpasturised cheese, blue cheese, meat not cooked all the way through, 'fresh' pate (i.e. not from a tin or otherwise packaged), bio yoghurt. I think that's it. I've compromised on a few th...

Re: Water water water
You are from what I see a smallish gal, so much water must be a real problem. See I rationalise it and say in an evening in my youth, seems so long ago :D I could drink gallons of beer so should be able to cope with 3.5 litres now. That would be water dear! My consultant told me that beer definitel...

As far as I'm aware, yes you can, but check with the hospital renal nutritionist.

Re: Kidney protectors
How about a boxing/muay thai type belly protector? http://www.geezersboxing.co.uk/boxing-pads/body-protector I would buy one of these then chop out all the padding I didn't need (the centre bit and the other side to the tranplant) to make it lighter and smaller. Found this site as well: http://evosh...

So glad to hear from you too, Grey.
Things will be up and down for a while, but I'm glad things are settling down.

Re: An Update from Jooles
I'm awesome, thanks! I'm down to my target weight of 90kg. I actually got down to 87, but starting at the gym has seen me put some more muscle on. I ate and ate and ate post-transplant. My weight on leaving hospital was 108kg, which ballooned to 122kg within 9 months. It took a bit of work to get it...

Re: Creatinine creeping up
I have IgA and there were 2 things on the agenda when my creatinine started to rise. I was put on 500mg of MMF (Mycophenolate Mofetil) twice a day. The science behind this is inconclusive, but my consultant thought it worth trying. I also considered fish oil tablets, for which there is also inconclu...

Re: Transplant Complications
Yes, in the UK we get triple therapy, a combination of prednisolone, MMF and tacrolimus. We are warned about diabetes and monitored for it. At 3 months we loose one of the three drugs. Which one depends on personal circumstances and the result of a kidney biopsy. Not necessarily - Hammersmith (wher...
