Re: Hello again...
I cannot remember if I mentioned the NKF web site to you, I think they have a good description of PKD and its effects. Tiredness and sickness are certainly recognised symptoms of kidney failure. As to the up-and -down function, I don’t think that would be described as typical of PKD, it usually show...

Re: Hello can anyone advise me pls ?
Hello AmandaClair, sounds as though you are having a miserable time. From your description, I think you are having kidney problems; the backed-up urine will cause, in the longer term, irreparable damage to your kidneys. I think you are feeling the early stages of this. I would insist on seeing a nep...

Re: Questions about dialysis options
PD and space – if the volume of dialysis fluid is too low there is no hope of PD working. Large kidneys will occupy the fluid space (as in my case). Fitting PD catheter – some surgeons prefer to use a full anaesthetics one reason is repairs can be made to any hernias found at the time. The PD cathet...

Re: Dialysing on another persons home machine?
I do not see any problem in using someone else’s machine. If the blood circuit is replaced (the usual procedure) each use, and the machine does its normal heat disinfection cycle (for the dialysis circuit) with the recommended chemicals then it is sterile. This is the procedure in a dialysis unit, w...

Re: Hydration Testing
As I understand it, the urine colour test is only applicable to fully functional kidneys. In dehydration the skin is less flexible (hence the pinch test, the skin is slow to recover to its normal position), the pulse is fast and weak. Other effects are dizziness/light headed and the patient may be l...

Re: Getting a fistula!!
Just to add to the above, the ‘thrill’ is a buzzing feeling at or very near to the (new, made by the surgeon) junction between the artery and the vein. The operation is usually done with a local anaesthetic, can take up to 3 hrs but more usually 2 hrs, just boring laying there.

Re: anyone else read this in news today?
I wonder, did any of us who have been through the transplant ‘discussion’ get the feeling that a transplant was being sold to you. Not so much by the surgeon but the Transplant Liaison nurse/manager (or whatever her title). At the other end of the spectrum, I have seen a transplant team pressuring A...

Re: kidney removal and subsequent inability to have PD
Unfortunately, PKD does not progress in a liner fashion, in terms of blister growth it can lay dormant for years then suddenly put in a spurt of growth. Also the effect on kidney function is erratic as what happens mostly, is internal blister cause pressure on the tubules causing them to collapse th...

Re: Dehydration
Get some medical help on this now, ring your GP or consultant. Low BP on HD is a common problem but is usually corrected by taking a drink and, as you mention, reducing the rate/amount of water removed. The hot weather and the runs, both will make you lose water and will require an increase in intak...

Re: Push to see consultant
The water is a catch 22 situation, yes, more water may help to flush you out but without some medication to drive your kidneys you are more likely to retain the extra water with all the problems that go with that. Less water, I would not do that without medical advice it can be dangerous. If are goi...
