Re: Low eGFR before i'm 30 years old
Don't forget that eGFR means "estimated GFR" and I believe that I heard the method of estimating is not accurate at high figures - it is used mostly for people who have a seriously low eGFR. As I recall, I had eGFR at around 70 before I donated but the accurate GFR (only ever done once!) was 85 or s...

Re: Will diet make a difference?
Sorry I can't help with the diet question, but your symptoms sound pretty much the same as my brother's before I donated to him. One thing i have noticed over the past few months is sore joints and general aching in my back, hips and pelvis. Even when rested in the morning, I wake up and struggle to...

Re: Does Donating a Kidney Shorten Your life?
No, not in my view. I'm male and I donated to my younger brother over 5 years ago - we are both in excellent health and have been ever since his medication was sorted (and his egfr is now better than mine!). I honestly do not notice the absence of a kidney at all, except for the fact that I don't us...

Re: Nephrology letter
While I understand that not everyone can help or know what I am asking about and if you hadn’t answered @wagolynn I would be very anxious by now . It is a sad that even thought my post generated nearly 100 views only one person tried to help . Because Wagolynn very promptly gave the answer that mos...

Re: Donor is not a tissue match
That's a shame but it apparently does not prevent the transplant; it depends exactly on a whole lot of things as they can now prescribe drugs to overcome the mis-match in many cases. However, are you sure that really is what was said? As a donor, I was very confused about this and I think it was bec...

Re: Donor
I'm guessing it's age related, as my eGFR ia about 50 now, vs 80 before. That's fine by me as I know you lose function every year anyway, as you get past 50-ish, but my recipient (a brother 7 years younger) nw has a better eGFR than mine!

Hi
I put a lot of info on the donor process on my blog http://diaryofakidneydonor.blogspot.co.uk/ (donated Oct 2013). I afraid I doubt that your donor can get through the process as quickly as you hope.

Re: Was My Post Deleted - Documentary Screening
every once in a while someone comes to the forum claiming to be the bearer of a previously unknown miracle cure ... and I get on my high horse and say ... 'give it a rest fella ... do you think we would be wasting our time here if there was a miracle cure!!' Absolutely. My brother is a GP; once, wh...

Re: Hydration after Transplant
I had my annual hospital check last this week and asked the neph about this subject, in particular how much fluid I should take daily and whether tea, coffee and beer count. He said that he is happy if I have even just 2 litres per day, and suggested half water/cordial and half tea/coffee, so my 2.5...

Re: Kidney removal
Hi Janita I donated my left kidney laprascopically two years ago so I've been through this! See my blog for lots of gory details. The surgeon said to me about the possibility of opening me up if needed. Don't worry though - it's something they have to say to you and the consent form will include it ...

Re: Introduction: I have IgAN
Are both your sisters going? Have they not done a tissue type match yet? In my case that test was done separately on three potential donors and then only one went forward for more testing (after a family discussion as to who was the first choice!). NB The testing can take months so they need to get ...

Re: Transplant Surgeon Meeting Advice
I'm surprised that they don't overlap the operations - they did at St George's for me and my brother. I thought it was just one of the mitigation factors that the kidney is "uninstalled" for as little time as possible. Or do they just not have the facilities (i.e. two adjacent theatres and enough st...

Re: Hi again Sometime since I logged in
Dear Liz and Chris I just want to say that I really do feel sorry for you both in your situations. I donated to my brother and we're from a large and yet pretty close family, but even so I don't think any of us family realised just how ill he actually was. The thing is, we just didn't like to ask hi...
