Re: Kidney disease and prejudice

Hi, You're not alone- I've posted about this before myself. You tend to find most people forget you're ill and treat you like anyone else which is great from an equality point of view but sometimes you need a little empathy and its often short-coming. Your true friends will always ask how you are an...

Re: Securing PD catheter?

Hi Dotty- I didn't get on with the tape either- felt like I was pulling skin off with it every time- I use Micropore dressings but I buy knickers that have a wide stretchy lace waistband- I find the end of the tube is held there quite securely tucked in the waistband and is much more comfy than extr...

Alport syndrome- genetics testing

Hi all, I've been being worked up along with one of my very best friends for her to donate a kidney to me- we got to the point where we were told we could have a date set for the op when the transplant team decided they finally want to put to bed whether or not I have Alport Syndrome. I don't have t...

Re: Drain Pain and discomfort of catheter internally

Hi Jooles, I suffered terribly with drain pain to the point I wanted to pull the tube out of my body in desperation. Following an x-ray my specialist said it was sited normally and so could only assume it was 'too long' for my insides and touching something that caused me the intense pain- they chan...

Re: Cycling to lose PD weight

Hi all, Did 26 miles yesterday- farmers bringing the barley in so I got COVERED in flies- glad I was wearing clear cycling glasses but going up the hills and dragging the air in meant a good few of them got swallowed!!!ew!!! Did a short sprint and beat my PB to do 25.3 mph- definitely feeling fitter...

Re: Baxter APD Last drain pain

Hi, First of all can I say I'm really sorry to hear of your wifes drain pain with the machine. I had exactly the same problem when I first started PD. I had pain with every drain and was bypassing all the time- it got to the stage where it was so bad I literally had to stop myself from pulling the l...

Re: Cycling to lose PD weight

Hey Mandy- I've heard such terrible stories about cycling accidents in London I don't blame you for being put off- we live just on the outskirts of Hull so we can literaly be in country lanes within a mile- I do cycle to work but its only a 15 minute ride away!! All the same we went out yesterday an...

Cycling to lose PD weight

Hi all, I've been on PD now for about two and a half years-in that time I put on over a stone and a half- funny when the nurse asks if I'm overloaded with fluid but I'm not- I say I'm afraid its fat!!! I don't eat a great deal so its a bit miserable putting in all those extra calories from the fluid...

Re: Just started peritoneal dialysis

Hi Brendan, I used to have all the same problems you're experiencing at first. I had random shoulder pains that are really bad I know and all you can do is lie down till they go off!!! I had terrible drawing pains when draining out too. If you can find them take a look at some of my old posts from a...

How sticky is dialysis fluid???

Hello all, I haven't posted for ages- not had any news to impart or change in anything- still on manual PD bags, no kidney offers from anywhere- just tootling along between 7 and 10% function. But I just wanted to say- how sticky is dialysis fluid!!! Its not a question cos I know the answer- it's ve...

Personal Independence Payment (PIP)/DLA

Hi all, I just had an email at work outlining the new rules coming in for abolishing DLA and replacing it with PIP. I'm on PD but I don't claim DLA as I manage really well and can walk unaided etc etc. Does anyone out there currently gettting DLA for being on dialysis think they might not get the PI...

Re: High Potassium

Hi Chris, I'm sorry to make it worse for you but apparently crumpets are quite high in potassium too! I substitute them with muffins. Tinned fruit/veg is okay as long as you're sure its been boiled to death and then the water discarded- makes it all a tad tasteless I'm afraid. I was told to avoid pi...

Re: High Potassium

I've always struggled with high potassium- I've posted on it a few times in the past. When I went on PD I was allowed to 'relax' the low potassium diet for a while but as I reduced the PD the potassium crept up again so I'm back on the diet. I did ignore the advice only once and ended up being admit...

Re: feeling sorry for myself

Hi Leanne, It really is bad in Ward 5 isn't it? I was in there twice in the space of three months - the first time I thought (hoped) it was a one-off with staffing/bed issues but it was worse the second time. The ward was full and I think about 90% were very elderly and needy patients- two ladies on...
