Re: Vegetairian on dialysis

Interesting - let me know if you find anything, Wagolyn.

I'm vegetarian but 'turned' after my transplant. From what I remember about the dialysis diet it would be even more difficult to do as veggie, though I'm sure it's possible.

Re: NEW - STAGE 2 - TOLVAPTAN

Hi Bodhisattva I hope hubby is able to restart the treatment and avoid end stage - I know little about PKD. Nor am I the best person to share personal stories since I was at your husband's stage about 32 years ago - though that's good news in itself! But didn't want to read and run. I would advise n...

Re: Hair loss advice

It's a common concern. I'd suggest searching the forum as there have been several previous threads. I lost tons of hair and it went very thin, then it bounced back and has been way too thick for many years. But I'm on ciclosporin, which causes excess hair growth, so people these days will have a dif...

Re: fed up with dialysis

Hi Mac It sounds very tough. Hang in there. On the transplant issue, is there any harm in going on the list? The wait is long and you might as well be on it in case you change your mind. Plus in the process you'll learn a lot more about transplantation including stats etc and be able to make a fully...

Re: CAPD and holiday

There are many people on the forum with more recent PD experience than me. I don't think the holiday is a risk so much as a potential practical problem. Has he told the people organising the dialysis? People travel a lot on PD but not normally in the first few days and weeks. They either put the sup...

Re: Fear of tx failure?

Hi Thumps I wonder the uncertainty itself is one of the problems? if so maybe you could speak to your specialists at the next appointment. They're not going to promise anything. But I reckon they know which kidneys look set for the long term and which will fizzle out in the medium term.Though of cou...

Re: How long have you had your transplant?

Had mine for 43 years. Sadly it has finally given up the ghost and I have had my first day of training for PD today. Luckily this went well and paracetamol seemed to control the 'drain pain'. I'm now waiting (not so patiently) for kidney number 2 to turn up. 43 years is astonishing. I hope it's not...

Re: How long have you had your transplant?

Hi Sue The bucket list idea is interesting. Younger people probably should plan families and careers to take advantage of the transplant, or whatever big life goals are important to them. I've been extremely lucky. My transplant is coming up for its 30th anniversary and it's just background for me m...

Re: Flu jabs - not too late

Hi JMan Yes, I heard on the radio today that this year's jab isn't actually very effective at all. But the advice is still to get one since a small benefit is better than no benefit... The kids' nasal spray is far more effective apparently. I've had years of being hyperthyroid, controlled by meds, a...

Ah, never realised that. He sometimes gets one free at work, sometimes is out of the office that day and pays in Boots, so he's never been to the GP surgery or our regular pharmacist who might have said.

Flu jabs - not too late

Hi everyone I was reading New Scientist today and it sounds like this year's 'Aussie flu' is a nasty one. And the NHS is already struggling. Their advice is to get a jab now if you haven't already. Mine is free of course and my son gets one at school, but my partner pays for one - for his own sake b...

Re: Hello all.

Hi anonymous It's a very kind and generous thought! You're absolutely right that pre-emptive transplantation, before dialysis is required, is far preferable. It gives better outcomes not to mention preserving quality of life. However they won't do it so far in advance of the need. They'll do what th...

Re: Age 34 - GFR went from 71 to 47 - sudden drop in month

Hi, I hope you get a better result with the retest. With the back pain did you use creams containing ibuprofen? Or were you popping them to deal with the pain? NSAIDs like aspirin and ibuprofen are forbidden for kidney patients (apart from sometimes a prescribed low-dose daily aspirin to reduce card...
