The role of the renal dietitian

The renal dietitian will take your diet history (find out what your normal pattern of food intake is), look at your blood results to determine if changes are necessary, and then build an appropriate diet. Loss of appetite is a very important symptom and may indicate the need for dialysis or increasing dialysis and the need for supplemental nutritional drinks or food.

The diet will be individually tailored for you, taking into account medical and social factors, as well as your own food preferences.

Every patient will have different dietary requirements, and what's good for one person may be harmful for another. After your initial consultation with the dietitian, you will have your own individual diet which will be reviewed and changed when necessary.

With severe kidney failure there is no getting away from the fact that the diet may have to be restrictive and have a big impact on daily life, but the dietitian will make it as easy as possible for you.
