The problem with medication

Healthy kidneys play an important part in removing some drugs and medicines from the body. So, when this function is impaired, these drugs will not be effectively removed - they may remain in the blood in high concentrations.

This problem can make it difficult to prescribe medication for the treatment of kidney disease, and for other unrelated illnesses that kidney patients may get. Some drugs may need to be prescribed in reduced doses or much less frequently than usual. Always mention to a doctor and the pharmacist that you have kidney disease so that they will use the correct dose.
