Vegetairian on dialysis

Post by wagolynn »

Are there any vegetarians on dialysis out there?

A new patient has started at the dialysis unit I use, she is a vegetarian, not on the internet.

I have been looking for recipe books to help her get going with the diet but the only titles I have found are claiming with the correct diet kidneys can be made better, I cannot recommend books that make that sort of claim.

Has anyone any source of vegetarian recipes that are dialysis friendly please?

Interesting - let me know if you find anything, Wagolyn.

I'm vegetarian but 'turned' after my transplant. From what I remember about the dialysis diet it would be even more difficult to do as veggie, though I'm sure it's possible.

Hi AmandaClare,

As I said in my first post I can find some recipe books on the internet but in the bits available to read they talk of curing sick kidneys with their diet.
That puts me off them straight away.

As a general cook book/guide then the NFK backed book. It’s not veggie based but sure talking to a dietician they can use as a guide and adapt good meat free alternatives.

I got a copy early 2012 to help me out, think I had gifted it to another member here along with a PD catch activity band after TX. The book is also a good guide on limits/restrictions etc.
Now 35 with Alports and I had my first kidney-versary 18th feb 2013....I hope to have many more.

My living donor and his family are doing all well.

It’s a good book, hope I never have to buy another copy. I was a bad dialysis patient, but this helped.

There's some veggie's and even vegans on dialysis. Both work well if you have good clearance and dialyse frequently.

Well dialysis works well if you have good clearance:)

NONE of the books below claim to 'cure' kidney disease, and most have a substantial area/list of recipes and tips for vegetarians dishes.

Thank you JMan, I will pass the list on, though the patient is not on the internet, she should be able to find them in book shops.
