Do large kidney stones eventually cause kidney damage?

Post by Genevieve189 »

I have two kidney stones, one in each kidney. At my last scan, a year ago, one is 10mm, the other 6mm. To date I have had no problems with them at all, apart from the occasional urine infection, which is simply cured with antibiotics.

At my last consultation with the urologist, I asked if I needed to have anything done about them and got the impression it was up to me whether or not I had any treatment. The urologist didn't seem bothered. At that time I decided that, as they weren't a problem, I would leave them alone for the time being. I will be seeing the urologist again in a couple of months, after another scan.

My main concern is whether or not stones of this size, which are gradually getting bigger year on year, will eventually affect my kidney function. Is anyone able to tell me this? I will definitely be discussing it more fully with the urologist next time I see him, but would be interested to hear of anybody else's experiences. I am a little concerned that, by leaving them, I may be storing up more problems for the future.
