Are tattoos allowed after transplant? Has anyone gotten one after their transplant?
If I ask my doctor, I get the reply "Don't be stupid!" But I want one to remember my transplant, I want one that will signify everything. And I can't really find much on the topicc..so your opinions are welcome..
Thank you =]
Andrea.

Not a topic I have investigated but for starters I would think it an unwise procedure for a transplant recipient. Why? Because you will be taking immunosuprressants and you will be more liable to infections in general. So why would it be sensible to inject stuff into your skin? Same reason I think, but I dont know medically, that botox would be a bad idea.

Hi Andrea,
I also have asked about this subject with my doctors and they say that it would be better to wait about 12mths before you get a tattoo. If that is of any help to you.
All the best

Tattoos
Hi Andrea, I have several large tattoos, I know when I had them done there was quite a bit of bleeding. Whilst they are not injected, the needle does run fairly deep into the skin layers as does the dye.
I am not being a miserable old **** at all but I would think it quite possible that you could get an infection despite your artist being fully qualified and carrying out aseptic preparation etc. I agree with what Helen says. I have noticed that since my tx I bleed easier and longer and also bruise quite badly.
I too would love a new tattoo but have decided that I best not risk it at this time.
If you do get one done, make sure they are fully certified due to HIV/Hep infections too, sounds really boring but there are some "cowboys" out there.

Re: Tattoo's after Transplant?
Hello Andrea! I've had two tattoos since my kidney transplant and have had no issues with either of them. They healed in the normal amount of time, didn't bleed a whole lot, didn't become irritated, and most importantly didn't cause any fluctuation in my bloodwork levels. I felt perfectly fine afterwards, too.
Re: Tattoo's after Transplant?
There is an increased risk of infection, so my thought would be, 'why take the risk?'
