A surgery/hospital visit question

Post by nycpetit »

did any of you who've had hospital visits for your kidney disease, whether it be pd insertion, or a transplant lose weight while you were in the hospital? I was just wondering. I assumed that you probably do since you are not eating much, and it's stressful, but no one's said anything to me. Just curious.

Wow Natalie,

Good luck! As far as the weight, everyone is different. For the most part, if you are very swollen with fluid now, it will appear that you have lost weight, even though its water and not "fat" weight.

I tend to loose weight when i'm hospitalized, bc my apetite seems to go. It really depends though on WHY i am in the hospital in the 1st place. A person can be nausous from meds, or simply in the hospital for a broken leg! So there is no straight answer, bc it depends basically on whether your'e eating or not. Either way, when i do lose, i tend to start gaining it back when i come home. So a temporary hospital stay for me results in a temporary weight loss that normalizes itself in a very short amount of time when i'm home.

Hi Natalie,

I was not sure if you were going to be admitted tomorrow or on the day of transplant. Anyway I just wanted you and your Stepdad to know that I will be praying for you both on Thursday. I will be asking for straightforward and successful surgeries and quick recoveries. I am excited for you both. Look forward to hearing from you post transplant.

God Bless you both.

Surgery/hospital

I just got out of the hospital and lost weight mostly because the food was so bad I just couldn't eat it. Good luck with your surgery. Bruce

Hey Natalie,

I forgot to answer your question. I actually lost weight after transplant and have kept it off. Since you are going to do a similar protocol this may be significant. Initially, I had a lot of blood values which were out of whack - Potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosporus. I also had low HCT and HGB and had to have epo - The first ever. I was always able to maintain normal levels while on PD with just iron pills. I am not sure why I lost weight. Don't know if it was the due to these side effects from the meds or something else. I ate like the proverbial pig in hospital - eating has Never been a problem! The blood levels all righted themselves in the first month or two. I have not lost any additional weight but then I have not gained either.

A surgery/hospital visit question

I can't speak for transplant surgery, but my PD surgery was in and out in about 6 hours--I didn't have a chance to lose weight. Can't speak for anything else.

Well when i was first in hospital before all of this i lost alot of weight but that was becausee i was soooo ill. I didnt eat barely anything whilst i had in infection inside my body (7 monhts) so iu was fed through NG tube or a drip.

After my Tx, i didnt eat for a week the only reason they let me home was cos i ate a sandwich. so I did lose a bit of weight there, but those steroids help me put it bk on. (now 8 months down the line Im tryin 2 lose it).

But i think it is due to the food, the feeling ill n jst if u know how its gonna taste its sum times best to leave it!!!
