Gross Hydronephrosis??

Hi,
My dad has recently diagnosed with 2 cm kidney stone at PUJ resulting left gross hydronephrosis (20 cm.). He never had a pain or any symptoms for this. This detected in his normal abdominal sonography(Done for intestine which came normal).
His createnine level was 1.78. according to doctor his right kidney urinal path was also narrowed. So doctor done a stricture & put a stent at right side. And started antibiotic etc.
My query to these : 1) Why after diagnosis createnine elevated fast ?

Now doctor is suggesting to do Removal of left kidney(Hydronephrosis). Is it the only option left for this?? Cant we remove the stone & water inside the kidney & let give some time to kidney to recover? Has anyone suffered from these..? Pls. help what should we do?
