Hi Someone posted a while back with questions about vaccinations for long distance travelling post transplant. I'm hoping to make another trip again (before this kidney peters out!) and have some additional information that might be useful.

1. Malaria prophylatics (spelling?)

My doctor has always prescribed some kind of antibiotic for my anti malaria tablets. You need to start taking these in advance of a trip and they affect your cyclosporin levels so your consultant will need to change the dosage.

2.Bangkok Hospital at 2 Soi Soonvijal, 7 New Petchburi Road, Bangkok, 10320 has a Kidney Centre. The centre has specialized doctors that treat all kinds of kidney problems from dialysis to transplant. They can provide haemodialysis with internationalstandard dialysis machine (state of art equipment including reverse osmosis technique which meets USA standards). Also has a peritoneal dialysis programme

There is a 24 emergency care unit with specialise physicians and have interpreters for a really really long list of languages! (English seems standard). Phone in an emergency on (66) 2310 3000 or 24 emergency hotline (66) 2310 3102 [dialling from outside Thailand you will need the country code].

Bangkok is easy to get to from all over Thailand and also from Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Internal flights tend to be fairly inexpensive.

3. Other antibiotics to take with you would be metronidozal. Its a particularly good one for stomach upset called giardia (gives the smelliest flatulence I have ever witnessed!!) Also amoxycillin or another general antibiotic to self medicate in case of uti.

Hope this might be useful?

Best wishes
Nicky
