diet question

Post by Mike »

Hi,

I've been meaning to ask my dietician this every time I am at the unit but I forgot last time I was there as I was so shocked when she said my results were perfect!!

Am I right in thinking that Soya is probably high is phposphate seeing as it is basically just protein?? So I can't use soya milk as a substitute for real milk?

any ideas?

Phosphate in milk

Post by Gil »

Mike,

Milk contains 250 mg P per cup (8 oz, 240 cc).
Soy milk and most milk substitutes contain about 125 mg P, which is still high (4 times higher than Coke).

cheers for that at least I know that I can have twice as much soya milk as real milk and if you add cream (even better if it's double cream) to soya milk it tastes ok

Hello Mike.

I was told that a product called Vitamite can be helpful for those of us trying to lower our phos. levels:

LadySycamore,

Check the nutrition info:

http://www.vitamite100.com/nutritionalinfo.html

Is says - Phosphorus 150mg (per 8 floz) which is a little higher than soy-milk, but the potassium is about 50%.

Right...I suppose at the time that it was recommended to me, my bloods were better than they are now. I'm just going by what was suggested to me, but if anyone has anything better, then that's great too. :)

My potassium has not been a problem so far... I've not been very good with the phosphates though this last week or so and I'm suffering for it now. It's so hard when everywhere you look there is food you can't have :( not to mention everyone getting drunk. I've not felt like drinking much and when I have I've not enjoyed it.
