Co-Trimoxazole

Post by R30 »

Hi all

I have been on this antibiotic since my tx seven weeks ago. It's primary function is to prevent me from getting a nasty type of pneumonia called Pneumocystis, although it has other benefits (treatment of urinary tract infections etc.) However, I have started to notice that the tendons in my ankles are becoming sore, particularly my achilles tendons (which are short in my family anyway, causing pain) - to the point that I hobble around at times. I have done some research into this drug and it does not fall under the usual class of antibiotics that play havoc with tendons (fluoroquinolones).

My question is: has anyone else experienced this whilst on this drug? I am assuming it's down to the antibiotic as I've had trouble whilst on Ciprofloxacin previously (a fluoroquinolone), and I am great believer in researching the drugs you are on. For instance, it transpires that the use of MMF and Aciclovir together can cause a condition called HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) which my father passed away from. Although my whole family have been tested, there is some question mark over me as to whether I actually have it or not. As a consequence, Southmead are now keeping a closer eye on me and have referred me to their Cardiologist for further tests. It sometimes pays to be in the know!

Any information or advice anyone can give me would be much appreciated.

Ruth xx :D
