Hello, well Randy's PD tube procedure was a success, as far as the tube filling and draining properly. Randy was not real happy with the sedation, he was much more aware then he wanted to be. The doctor didn't seem to understand that Randy just wanted to be totally "out of it". The doctor also sent him home with no pain meds, saying extra strength tylenol would do the trick. Luckily for some left over vicodin from the nephrostomy procedure. That doctor was much more generous with making Randy feel as comfortable as possible. He was up and down all night, has been throwing up all morning and has pain from the surgery. Not a good day. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. I'm sure it will take a couple days. Thanks for all your concern, I am always open to suggestions and hearing about other's experiences. Hope you have a great day, anne

Hello Anne, so sorry to hear Randys experience :( Hope he's feeling better soon. My daughter had her p/d under general anaesthetic but said she felt like she'd been hit by a bus:( She too was given inadequate pain relief post-op and lost quite a bit of faith in medical profession. Since then after long discussions with staff it was decided to provide paediatric (kids) morphine post op for 1-2 days. The hosp have done audits which included my daughter and found that although experiences differ adequate pain relief should be provided such as morphine. Hopefully as time goes on the pain and discomfort should settle.

good luck to you both best wishes Elaine ;)

Hi Anne,

I'm glad to learn that Randy's surgery was successful though I am upset that the doctor did not give him a general. I have the philosophy that I don't want to know anything until it's all over! Torture is not my bag! I am so glad you had some left over pain killers because, in my opinion, exta strength tylenol just does not do it. Since the incision is high in the abdomen that makes it more painful. Hopefully Randy will be feeling much better soon. If the vomiting is continuing please ask the doctor for something to settle his stomach and break the cycle.

Thinking about you both, Anne

Hi, thanks for the wishes. Randy was really really sick for about 30 hours, throwing up and headache. Now he is finally feeling better. The hospital made a follow up call and I told them how Randy felt regarding the sedation and getting no pain meds. Maybe that will help someone down the road. Thanks again. anne

Hi Anne,

Sorry to hear about Randy's initial sufferings, but glad he is feeling better now. Good luck with the dialysis - I'm sure it will all go smoothly.
