My husband will be having a kidney transplant within the month. We have not got a lof of information from the doctors about what to expect after the operation. We just had a baby three months ago and my husband watches the baby while I go to work. How long will I need to take of work to care for both my husband and my son? Will he be able to walk up and down stairs right after the surgery? When will he be able to lift the baby (over 14 pounds)? What do I need to know as the care-giver? I am not a nurse so are there drainage tubes... etc? I would appreciate any information you can give. Thanks

Hiya ;)

Hello can c u online early in am same as me!!LOL can't sleep at mo!!! Maybe u awake with u baby??

Well briefley 'usually' in hospital post transplant approx 5 days to 2 weeks or so could be longer depends on how things go??

Usually dont go home with tubes in usually taken out after few days or so?
Are u able to get carers leave from work??? or arrange 'special' agreed leave with u employers?? to care for u husband post transplant?? Every1 different in recovery rates etc?. May find stairs bit painful initially and feel weak, may ned help to carry baby would expect initially?

Maybe worth discussing with family, friends if any1 can help u out for while??

There are websites National Kidney Federation (uk) not sure where u live? that have lots info about transplants etc wot to expect etc?
Also Transplant Talk another web site? Many other sites too also CHAT site where u can chat to other people in simialr circumstances and speak to people etc online. ;) Lotta friendly people all willing to try help discuss similar probs etc ;)

Hope this is useful and good luck u will get there just lotta juggling etc ;)
Be worth it in end for u husband to be transplanted and eventually feel better.

I am amum / carer of 16 yr old girl on dialyis 20mnths and wondered how we would cope 2 other girls too twins 14 no family at all to help etc but we do 'somehow'

best wishes Elaine ;) Uk Wilts
