Hi all, I'm hoping someone will be able to help me.I was diagnosed with stage 4 ckd just 3 weeks ago I'm also type 2 diabetic. What can I expect at my first visit to Nephrology department next month? My Gfr is 22 and from what I've read I won't be needing dialysis but will I get tests on day of appointment? Will I be seeing a dietetian? I .am finding it all hard to take in and my emotions are all over the place.Any information would be gratefully received.Thank you in advance.

Hi Teen,

Welcome to the forum.

Dietician - You may be have a session with a dietician for your diabetes but at this stage, unless you have a very abnormal diet, not for your kidney condition.

Kidneys - The first thing they will want to do is to establish the cause of your kidneys not working properly, initially by asking you about your lifestyle, and family history, it is usual to get appointments for tests after the first visit.

With a Gfr of 22, and if the cause of your problem known, the next stages would be cure the problem if it is possible or you will have regular visits to monitor your progress until Gfr gets down below 10% at this point the consultant will be thinking about dialysis.
The final decision about dialysis is influenced by how your condition is affecting your general health, dialysis is delayed for as long as possible because it intrudes on normal living.

There are several articles that will help you understand what is happening or will happen available at the home page of this site http://www.kidneypatientguide.org.uk/contents.php click on the address, and it should take you there.

If the articles throw up more questions, come back, I am sure someone will be able to help.
When seeing the consultant, don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand, you will find them very helpful.

Best wishes.
