Can anyone give advise. I have a Atrophic left kidney with a 17mm stone lodged within. The kidney is still draining and functioning at 17%. The hospital that I attended will not attempt to remove the stone as they feel it is not worth it and would like to remove the kidney !!! Am I wrong in thinking that if they got the stone out the kidney could repair. Also is a 17% function better than nothing !!! I am at the moment on a wait and see what happens !! I have been told if the stone moves and causes any problems the kidney will be removed. Really at a loss and scared as to what do do next !!!!

In your position, I think I would be asking the consultant why the kidney is not worth preserving, enabling you to understand the options better.
I do understand, when we first hear about our health problems most of us are unable to think of any meaningful questions until much later.
I have always found consultants happy to listen to, and answer any later questions, it's a good idea to make a list of these questions so at the second session you do not miss any.

It is not clear from your post, if your other kidney is functioning normally, if it is, removing the defective one should not cause you any problems.
Apart from reducing your, 'safety margin', should the remaining one get into trouble.
But if it did, there would be the option of having a transplant.

So, overall I don't think I would worry but do seek clarification from the consultant.

Best wishes.
