Water retention, CKD4 & Furosemide

Hi guys, I'm brand new. My egfr is 19 and I suffer from two weeks of water retention after I ovulate until my period.

So right now I'm really hacked off because my legs are like tree trunks because of water retention and stomach swollen. It happens to the extent where I gain 10lb water and I could barely get my jeans done up today.

I told my consultant about it and he prescribed Furosemide but told me only to use it when I have to. I've read the information leaflet and stuff on the net and there's warnings about it damaging kidneys that are already impaired. So I just don't know whether to give them a go or just put up with it and not take the risk. Has anyone out there been prescribed Furosemide with kidney disease? What was your experience with it?

I work so hard to keep my weight down as I love my food and gain weight so easily but such bloating for nearly half the month is so annoying. I've lost 9.5 stone in the past four years which continues to be hard work but I'm upset that I'm cursed with such dramatic swelling without even having the joy of fattening food to cause it. It also doesn't help that my hormones make my reaction to it really emotional.

I'm not on any hormonal contraception at the mo. Has anyone had any benefit from a particular type of contraception in terms of water retention? Can't take the combined pill due to BP. Thinking of trying Mirena coil. Any advice or thoughts appreciated x

Hi DavB,

I have been taking Furosemide for about six years without any noticeable effect on kidney function.

Has your consultant suggested a dose? If not I would suggest starting at 160 mg per day, 2 X 20 mg with breakfast, and 2 X 20 mg at lunch time, I avoid taking them in the afternoon to minimise the toilet visits in the night.
If this is too much try 2 X 20 mg Breakfast, and 1 X 20mg lunch.

Any change in dose usually take about 2 days to show the effect on me.

If you don't know about the dimple test, to get an estimate of how much water you are carrying, search on hear.

Or if you know your 'normal' weight, keep an eye on what's going on by weighing yourself this is best done at about the same time each day.

DavB,
Sorry to disagree with Wagolynn, but he has very little renal function (he is on dialysis) and you have an eGFR of 19 these are two different situations entirely. If you are unsure about your dose, ask your doctor.

Wagolynn,

It's unlike you as you are usually spot on but your maths is a bit wobbly - 2x 20mg on a morning and 2x20mg at lunch is 80mg rather than 160mg.

Thanks for the replies. He's prescribed 40mg in the morning when needed. I weigh every day and jumped up 3lb in 24 hours but it can go up as high as 7lb extra water weight. I just don't want to do anything to bring the inevitable further decline sooner. Still not taken it.

Hi
I totally understand how you feel about weight gain as l also have Polycystic Ovaries and its a battle to stay the same, losing weight is a bonus when possible. I have the Myrena and it has been life changing after the problems with PCO. That alone may put an end to your reoccurring problem every few weeks.
Having CKD has it's own challenges.

With GFR at 19 I would not worry about making things worse, your condition will progress in its own time.
