I'm curious; is it common to get so hungry after dialysis at the unit? I have a nice sandwich there with my water and by the time l get off I'm starving! Considering that l'm not moving around l find it strange. At home a sandwich lasts quite a while and that's with me running doing chores etc.

You are not on your own, I too am usually hungry after Haemodialysis.

I dialyse on the evening shift, so it is late when I get home but I have a sandwich, and a drink of Lift (lemon tea), before I go to bed.

The dietician says, make hay while the sun shines, as many people do not feel like eating, especially when the kidneys finally pack up.

Yes it is, I eat for England.
Then my weight goes up and the neph is like "you are carrying too much fluid" and dishes out extra sessions.

The staff automatically assume any extra weight is fluid but I am eating lots. Today, Rice crispies, two toast, apple, nectarine, all you can eat Chinese Buffet with two plates full (I know I know, but it was the first time in years), steak and potato, two tuna sandwiches and an egg roll.

When I turn up at Heamo they think I have been swilling pints!

It looks as though you are snacking rather than having three good meals a day. Habit is important when it comes to eating.

Try porridge for breakfast, use jumbo oats (large flaks made of individual grains rolled) these are slow to digest this damps down the urge to nibble, oats contain both soft and hard fibre which is good.

Lunch time, think about the five-a-day, plenty of fibre here, but don't overlook the protein. The fibre fills you and is slow to digest (stretch sensors on your stomach signal full). It does not matter if the main meal of the day is at midday or evening though one a day is important.

Tea time, salads etc. though keep the protein going (low protein is one of the things that signals hunger)

Use wholemeal bread, in theory we should not but the dietician says, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Your favourite 'naughty' foods have to become weekly or monthly treats depending how 'naughty' they are.

Apparently, according to the dietician, patients are better off slightly overweight when on haemodialysis.

I know it's a failing of me but I object to people telling me what to eat. I know my body and it is surprising that when I have occasionally had food that are ab absolute no no and I am dreading my blood results, they are fine.

I think alot of the problem with being hi gry on dialysis is boredom. Despite the fact that I read, catch up on films and tv programmes and listen to music, I still get bored and have to have a nibble or two.
