Long distance recovery for wheelchair user

This is a bit of a long shot.

My partner recently almost got stranded away from home with her power pack wheelchair. Her insurance only covers short distances away from home, or to where she's staying! And the chair just ceased to work (failed to charge).

In the end she managed to get a lift from a family member for the 130 miles to get her and the broken chair home.
If they hadn't been available I'm not sure how she would have got home at all. (neither of us has a car and I was due to head back to London to dialyse.)

If anyone has any ideas, or experience of long distance insurance for wheelchair users. Would it be better to get travel insurance for a short trip?

Most seem to cover a short distance of 25 miles or less

Any actual experiences of this. Would you call the AA? Emergency services?

I think I would look out for a local insurance broker, and see if they can help find adequate insurance cover for you.
