Calcifications age 25

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a bit of advice/reassurance really.

I visited my GP in Sep 2015 with kidney stone pain in my right kidney. I was sent for a CT KUB scan which showed 'rather diffused calcifications in the parenchyma of my left kidney'. My GP sent my test results to a consultant urologist at the hospital to review and also referred me to a nephrologist. The urologist suggested a CT KUB with CONTRAST, but I declined due to being asymptomatic in my left kidney. The nephrologist did a lot of blood tests, a 24 hour urine test etc and all came back normal, kidney function is 100%. So I've got on with life quite happily until now Jan 2016 - I've started having niggling pain in both flanks now, not severe but transient. I visited my GP again and he suggested booking in for the KUB contrast which I have now done, but haven't yet received an appointment through. The urology appointment who advised the scan has been very unhelpful as to why he recommends this, he refuses to meet with me in person until after I've had the contrast scan.

I am absolutely terrified of having a CT with Contrast - I have an anxiety disorder and am convinced I will be allergic to the dye and die on the scanning table from anaphylaxis - I am also terrified this is some kind of cancer and I have now left it too late to do anything about it by the time it will be picked up.

My question is... has anyone else had calcifications show up or have any idea what this may point to at all?
The pain isn't severe, should I refuse the scan and wait and see again??

I'm not coping very well :(

Hi justonestepfurther,

First - have the scan, better the devil you know than the devil you don't.

The consultant has to manage his time, without the scan the consultant cannot tell you anything about what is going on.

Why should you have a reaction to the dye? If you have a genuine reason to have concerns about this see your GP, tell the GP what you are concerned about and why, if your fears have any grounding I am sure tests can be arranged.

If you were to have an anaphylactic shock, you would be in the best place possible.

Best wishes.

Hi Justonestepfurther

Yes I have calcifications bilaterally in my kidney paranchyma . It is called Nephrocalcinosis and it can be caused by lots of reasons including Hyperparathyroidism and other thyroid issues and also the body making to much calcium . I was told I have bilateral nephrocalcinosis and 30 % function in my left kidney . I am going for the rest of my results in two weeks . Google Nephrocalcinosis and read as much as you can.

Also you don't go fully into the scan machine when you have a renogram with contrast. Just your body goes in and a nurse is with you . So you can talk to her about you feeling anxious .
Sorry i can't help any further
