Missing Dialysis

Post by Henriettab »

If someone were to miss dialysis for a day due to ill health, what effect would this have on someone? How long can you delay a usual dialysis session safely?

Hi Henriettab,

The answer to this question varies with individual patients.

If a patient is too ill to attend a dialysis unit, in my experience, they are hospitalised, and sessions are conducted in the hospital bed.

Missing one session of dialysis should not cause any incurable problems, as extra time or sessions can be used to correct any issues. It would be best to advise the dialysis team this has happened or is going to happen as early as possible, they can then plan any remedial action if it is required.

Bear in mind, healthy kidneys are at work most of the time.

I was told that if you are too I'll to attend your session they would admit you into hospital.
