hernia surgery while on capd

Post by nancy »

Hello! I have a question. Has anyone had surgery for hernia while on capd? My dad had to have one recently and he has an infection..he's been in the hospital for a month now without much improvement. I was just wondering if any of you have had this experience and what you did to get better. Thanks!

I'm not exactly sure about your question but am on immune suppressant drugs which makes me quiet susceptible and I had surgery and did not get any infections. Luck of the draw guess but sure as hell I would have the surgery any day to cure problems than no because I am afraid of infection.

Hi nancy,
Sorry to read about your dad.

Sick kidneys affects the immune system, so it is not a total surprise dad has an infection, the time to treat and cure the infection will depend on just what it is. If it is resistant to antibiotics, it will take some time.

Best wishes to you and dad.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Dad has been on peritoneal dialysis for 6 years and he's had this surgery twice. This time round he's been on three rounds of antibiotics. Both surgery site and peritonium are infected. We live in a very remote area where basic care for renal problems is minimal at best and there are no nephrologists. Any suggestions on medications/antibiotics?

My dear, please do not take advice from the mugs on a site like this, and I include myself as a mug, we are just laymen and although you may get some suggestions the only advice should be from a proper Dr or neph. With peritoneum infection it is VERY serious, it can kill in next to no time, drive fly do what you must but get seen by a proper kidney specialist. He must have a PD support team, ask them.

Your local GP would be the best person to talk this though with. I spent an awful week in a very bad way in a specialist renal ward with peritonitis with an additional two weeks at home to treat a nasty infection.
Please, please.......please speak to medical professionals
Now 35 with Alports and I had my first kidney-versary 18th feb 2013....I hope to have many more.

My living donor and his family are doing all well.
