pain after pyeloplasty

Hi I had surgery to fix blockage in my ureter, (narrowing due to blood vessel) a month and half ago. My stent was removed two days ago, and since then I am having pain on and off. With stent it was mostly discomfort, but now it is pain in the back and flank area. I am really confused because I was thinking to be completely pain free after stent. Is it possible to distinguish between kidney pain from blockage or residual/ recovery pain from surgery. My doctor scheduled renal scan in two months but I cant wait worrying that long. If anybody had this surgery, for how long can I continue to expect this pain?

Hi kashk416

Sorry to hear about the pain you are experiencing. I could be wrong but I would say that it would be impossible to distinguish between what is pain caused by the original problem or residual pain from the operation. Were you not given any telephone numbers on discharge of someone you could ring in the event of a problem? I would be trying to get back in contact with them if I were you, or at least visiting my GP?

I wasn't given any numbers. Thing is my doctor said I can continue to have pain on and of, not sure if he mean't forever due to this problem, or if he mean't temporary pain due to surgery. It does seem impossible to tell from pain what is causing it. I have tried to load myself with fluids to see if it brings on pain, if its still a blockage, it would like before surgery, and mostly it doesn't, so maybe its the surgery trauma and recent stent removal. I guess I will only know with time.

Could you please post a follow up to this thread? I also went through a pyeloplasty and it's been 6 months so far. I wouldn't say I'm having pain but I definitely have discomfort on and off under / around my rib cage on the side that I had the surgery done. So far though I have't had a dietl's crisis yet. Renal scan showed slow drainage but once injected with the diuretic right kidney cleared out quickly. Right kidney back to regular size not severely ballooned out like before the surgery. Doctor says the blockage is cleared but drainage may be slow. How long does this discomfort / pain last? Some days it's better some days it worse.
