Re: Needling Fistula Pain

Please can someone explain button holes?

Jman, you should definitely go into hospital administration, they need more people with experience and there's not much you haven't experienced!!

Re: What caused your kidney disease?

Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis also known as Mesangiocapillary Glomerulonephritis. Or MPGN or MCGN for short. It is another form of nephrotic disease where the immune system is attacking the kidneys. I have it very aggressively so not a great candidate for a transplant as the disease will ...

Re: Advice for haemodialysis patients

Very useful blog, thank you. I'm just nearing the start of dialysis, having my fistula tomorrow, and feeling pretty overwhelmed so it's really helpful to read your detailed account. :-)

Refusing steroids - a long one!

Okay, so my health is really bad at the mo. I have nephrotic syndrome (MPGN) and am in a massive flare up. I came out of remission about two years ago and my consultant has been trying to get me to take steroids every since. My protein leak is about 20g/24hrs which is really really high. My consulta...

Re: Gut Feeling I Will Never Have a Transplant

Don't feel guilty for expressing that, you can't control your feelings. It must've been hard to have your hopes dashed three times. I think some people like the idea of helping, but once they start the ball rolling reality hits them and it feels too difficult. And you're left with the disappointment...

Re: What age do children need to know

My four year old knows I'm ill. But I'm pretty disabled by it so its not like I could really keep it from him. He's grown up to know that mummy is poorly. He's handled it fine as far as I can tell, emotionally. Every so often he asks questions, and maybe as he gets older he'll ask more. I've always ...

Re: Unhappy with surgeon

I definitely wouldn't have an op performed by someone I didn't have much confidence in. In my opinion (just my opinion!) I would get a referral to an ENT specialist and have them do the op. Perhaps your GP could refer you. I always want field specialists to do ops on me, not general surgeons. You ma...

Re: Acute Renal Failure of my 1.9 year old daughter

Gosh, that all sounds scary for you. But a relief to know her creatinine has gone right back down to a very good level. How strange for all that to happen, not heard of anything like that before. I hope and pray that she remains stable and it was just a one off thing that doesn't happen again. I gue...

Re: New to the forum and looking for help

Hi Susan, Welcome! Sorry to hear about your kidneys and RA. I have to say I'm pretty shocked that you were prescribed anti inflammatories if they doctors knew you had some renal failure. Have you stopped those now? I have pain issues and take co-dydramol. It works fairly well, though I can't take mu...

Re: "Avoiding Feeling Helpless"

This is a FANTASTIC opportunity!!! I keep thinking how I'd love to get involved in talking to trainee doctors. I think it should be part of their training, to hear from patients and understand patients' needs. INFORMATION and KNOWLEDGE - I think its so important that doctors share info with patients...

Re: I'm a worried mother, how do you do?

Hi, (DISCLAIMER: I'm only speculating, please don't take anything I've said as truth and fact - I could be wrong on all counts!) It sounds like your son may have nephrotic syndrome. This is where the kidneys are inflamed and leak things into the urine, such as protein and blood. The protein-creatini...

Re: Symptoms - is this normal?

I'm not nearly as far on as you are with renal failure but I have very severe nephrotic syndrome. So I can't comment in terms of what's normal for stage 5. But I can relate to all those symptoms. A couple of things I've thought of are: Are you taking vitamin d supplements and do you know your vitami...

Re: wrongly prescribed???

I've been prescribed co-codamol and co-dydramol as 'safe' pain killers.

Its NSAIDs that are a no-no for renal patients, such as ibruprofen.
